Pour this over ice on a warm evening and you'll understand why Amarula has become South Africa's most-loved after-dinner ritual. Made from wild-harvested marula fruit, matured in French oak for two years, then blended with fresh cream, it's silky, gently exotic, and dangerously easy to sip. A taste of the African summer, delivered to your UK door.
Not for sale to persons under 18. Adult signature required on delivery.
We stock a lot of South African spirits, and Amarula earns its place every time. It's the bottle we reach for when we want something comforting after a heavy meal, and the one we recommend to customers sending a taste of home to a South African friend in the UK. What we like most is the balance: sweet enough to feel indulgent, but with real depth from those two years in French oak and a genuine marula character you don't get anywhere else. Currently between deliveries, so worth watching for when it's back in.
The nose leads with warm caramel and vanilla, layered with butterscotch and a subtle nutty edge from the marula fruit itself. On the palate it's velvety and full, all soft cream and toasted toffee, with that distinctive marula character bringing a gentle exotic-fruit lift and a hint of citrus tang beneath the sweetness. The finish is long and rounded, cream and vanilla lingering with a whisper of oak from two years of maturation. Rich without being cloying, and instantly recognisable.
Deep butterscotch and toasted toffee notes wrap the palate in soft, dessert-like sweetness from start to finish.
Smooth dairy richness gives the liqueur its signature silky mouthfeel, a spoonful-of-cream texture that coats the tongue.
The wild-harvested marula brings a gently tropical, nutty character with a subtle citrus tang beneath the sweetness.
Two years in French oak lends a soft vanilla backbone and rounded warmth that keeps the sweetness in balance.
There's nothing else quite like it. Amarula starts life as marula fruit, wild-harvested from trees that grow only across southern Africa's subtropical plains, then fermented, double-distilled and matured in French oak for two full years. Only then is it blended with fresh cream. The result is a liqueur that feels familiar and completely its own at the same time.
Expect caramel, vanilla and butterscotch on the nose, with a toasted toffee warmth underneath and a subtle nutty, exotic-fruit note that sets it apart from anything else in the cream liqueur category. The texture is properly velvety, and at 17% it's got enough backbone to feel like a grown-up drink rather than a sweet novelty.
How to enjoy it? The classic move is straight over ice, ideally at the end of a long dinner. But it's also brilliant stirred into strong coffee, poured generously over vanilla ice cream, or shaken into an espresso martini that will beat the standard version hands down.
A bottle of Amarula is one of those gifts that pleases just about everyone, from expat South Africans who grew up with it to friends who've never tried it. We ship across the UK, usually within a few days.
This is a liqueur made for slow evenings. Pour it over a generous cube of ice and let it open up, or stir a measure into a strong black coffee for an instant after-dinner treat. It's brilliant drizzled over vanilla ice cream, works a charm alongside a square of dark chocolate, and lifts a mug of hot chocolate into something indulgent. Serve chilled, always.
Serve well chilled, around 6-8°C, straight from the fridge or over plenty of ice to keep the cream fresh and lively.
A short chilled tumbler or rocks glass over a large ice cube, or a small liqueur glass if serving neat after dinner.
The heart of Amarula is the wild marula fruit, hand-harvested each summer from trees scattered across southern Africa's subtropical lowlands. The fruit is fermented, then double-distilled to concentrate its citrusy, nutty character into a clean base spirit. That spirit rests in French oak for two full years, picking up rounded notes of caramel, vanilla and toasted toffee, before being blended with fresh dairy cream. The oak ageing is what sets it apart from other cream liqueurs: it gives structure and warmth beneath the velvety texture.
Amarula
Amarula was born in 1989, when the Southern Liqueur Company (part of Distell) set out to bottle something genuinely African rather than borrow a European template. The result was the world's first cream liqueur built around the marula fruit, and it quickly became one of South Africa's most recognisable exports. The brand is inseparable from its elephant emblem, and that connection runs deeper than marketing: in 2008 the Amarula Trust was established to help protect African elephant populations, which famously feast on the same marula fruit come summer. It's a producer that has always leaned into its sense of place, the trees, the wildlife, and the seasonal rhythm of the harvest.
