Our Verdict

We rate this as one of the best value reds in our South African range, and it earns its place by being exactly what it promises. No pretension, no rough edges, just ripe, rounded Merlot that drinks beautifully on a Tuesday night. It's the bottle we reach for when we want easy pleasure rather than a talking point, and it's ideal for anyone new to South African reds or after a reliable house pour. If you like this softer, fruit-forward style, our wider Robertson range is well worth a look too.

Tasting Notes

Dark ruby in the glass, with ripe plum and sweet black cherry leading the nose. The palate is generous and rounded, that juicy plum carrying through with a brush of soft spice from four months in French oak. The oaking is gentle, so the fruit stays front and centre rather than getting buried under wood. It all closes on a smooth, velvety finish that makes the next sip easy. Approachable, fruit-forward and easy to love.

About This Wine

Here is a wine that asks nothing of you and gives plenty back. If you want a red that's ready the moment you pull the cork, with no fuss and no waiting around, this Robertson Merlot is it. In the glass it's a deep, glossy ruby. The nose leads with ripe plum and sweet black cherry, rounded and welcoming rather than serious. There's a gentle savoury edge underneath, and four months in French oak adds just enough weight to give it shape without ever burying the fruit. The finish is soft and velvety, the sort of texture that makes a second glass feel inevitable. The fruit comes from Robertson, in the Breede River Valley behind the Langeberg Mountains. It's a warm, sunny pocket of the Western Cape, cooled by south-easterly breezes and big drops in night-time temperature. That swing lets the Merlot ripen fully while holding onto freshness, which is exactly what you taste here: ripe, but never heavy or jammy. This is brilliant midweek drinking. Pour it with a roast chicken, a Sunday joint of beef or lamb, a bowl of pasta in a rich tomato sauce, or a simple grilled steak. It also makes a friendly, affordable gift for someone who just wants a good red to enjoy. We deliver across the UK, usually within a few working days.

Food Pairing

This is a proper midweek crowd-pleaser. Pour it with a Sunday roast chicken or a slow-cooked beef casserole and the ripe plum fruit does the heavy lifting. It's brilliant alongside a bowl of pasta in a rich tomato and herb sauce, and it has the gentle structure to handle a simple grilled steak or a roast leg of lamb without overpowering the plate.

  • Slow-cooked beef and red wine casserole
  • Spaghetti bolognese or a rich tomato pasta
  • Grilled sirloin steak with peppercorn sauce
  • Roast leg of lamb with rosemary

How to Serve

Decanting

No need to decant. This is a soft, ready-to-drink style, so simply open the bottle, pour and enjoy. A short rest in the glass is all the air it needs.

Behind the Wine

Robertson sits behind the Langeberg Mountains in the Breede River Valley, where hot, dry, sun-filled days give Merlot the ripeness it needs. What makes the difference here is the night-time cool: south-easterly breezes drift in off the Indian Ocean, dropping the temperature sharply after dark. That wide swing between warm days and cool nights lets the fruit ripen fully while holding onto fresh acidity, which is exactly why this Merlot tastes ripe and plummy yet never heavy or flat.

Ageing Potential

Made for drinking now rather than the cellar. With its ripe fruit, gentle oak and soft tannins, this is at its best young and fresh, so pull the cork within a year or two and enjoy that juicy plum character at full volume.

The Land

These Merlot vines are planted on the lower mountain slopes in deep Karoo soils that hold water well, giving the vines a buffer against dry, unforgiving summers. The rows are angled to shield the bunches from harsh direct sun and to catch the cooling south-easterly breeze during ripening. The result is even, balanced fruit with good colour and freshness.

The Winemaking

The grapes are picked at full ripeness, then cold-soaked for a couple of days before fermentation even begins. That early soak draws out deep colour and rounded fruit flavour, which is where the rich, dark ruby and that punch of plum come from. Fermentation runs in temperature-controlled stainless steel, keeping things clean and fruit-focused. After that, a short stint in French oak adds a little weight and a touch of complexity, just enough to fill out the texture without ever masking the ripe fruit at the heart of the wine.

About the Producer

Robertson

Robertson Winery began life in 1941 inside a small stone church on the edge of town, a missionary chapel no longer in use, repurposed for barrels and fermenters. That chapel still gives its name to the winery's everyday range, and the building remains part of the cellar today. Eight decades on, Robertson works with families who've been growing grapes for them for generations, which is part of why the wines feel so consistent and unfussy. The philosophy is simple: match the right grape to the right vineyard, handle the fruit gently, and let the warm valley sunshine do most of the talking. It's a producer that knows exactly what it's for, honest, generous, everyday South African wine.
